DISABLED ACCESS GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE
PROCESS FOR REQUESTING ACCOMMODATIONS, ACADEMIC ADJUSTMENTS, AND/OR ACCESS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES

The University of California, Riverside (UCR) remains committed to its historical excellence in the area of accessibility for the disabled. UCR, in compliance with Federal laws, State laws, and University regulations, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or age in any of its programs, activities, services, or practices. This nondiscrimination policy covers admission and access to, and treatment and employment in, University programs and activities. Additionally, individuals may complain of any action which they believe discriminates on the grounds of race, color, national origin, sex, disability or age.

The Vice Chancellor for Administration has been designated as the employee responsible for coordination the University's efforts to comply with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. In order to expedite the solution of problems, the following procedure has been established and is intended to be the primary form of redress for most cases:

INITIAL CONTACT OFFICE

Problems and complaints that have not been resolved informally should be brought to the following offices or to the Vice Chancellor for Administration who will refer the concern to the appropriate office for resolution. The primary offices involved and their areas of responsibility include:

  • Vice Chancellor for Administration (4123 Hinderaker Hall, 827-2680) - staff employment issues, facility accessibility, renovation of current facilities/planning of new facilities, general campus transportation (motor pool).
  • Executive Vice Chancellor (4108 Hinderaker Hall, 827-5034) - faculty employment issues, accessibility of computers, faculty accommodation of students.
  • Student Special Services (125 Costo Hall, 827-3861) - student support (adaptive equipment, note takers, interpreters, on-campus transportation, learning disability, classroom inaccessibility).
  • Concerns that are not resolved by Student Special Services should be brought to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (2108 Hinderaker Hall, 827-4641).

A written, signed request for accommodation, together with necessary documentation such as physicians' certification, is necessary when making a request.

APPEALS

If the complainant is not satisfied with the response to the request for accommodation, he or she can appeal the determination to the Chancellor's Office. The Chancellor's determination is final for the internal process.

UNLAWFUL DISCRIMINATION

The above described process is designed for appeals when requests for accommodations, academic adjustments, or access is not satisfactory. This is not a procedure for a determination of whether or not unlawful discrimination has occurred. For procedures for resolving complaints of unlawful discrimination, please refer to UCR Policy and Procedure No. 650-17.
